VfL Bochum 1848 has a long history that spans over 150 years. In July 1848, plans were made for the formation of an athletics club. The club was then officially founded on 18th February 1849. The formation of VfL Bochum 1848 as we know it today dates back to 1938 with the amalgamation of three separate clubs: Germania, TuS and Turnverein Bochum. In July 1949, the football section separated from the main club to form a stand-alone football club. Today, the 'newly-formed' football club, VfL Bochum 1848, has over 4,000 members. The sports club, VfL Bochum 1848 has a membership of some 6,000. The teams in the various sections of the sports club participate in  badminton, basketball, fencing, football, hockey, athletics, handball, swimming, dancing, tennis, table tennis, gymnastics and volleyball.
